Eden’s Embrace

2023 |  PHOTOGRAPHY, ART DIRECTION

This series of photographs explores the allure of temptation and humanity’s struggle with indulgence. It portrays humanity moving from a state of innocence to a state of indulgence and vanity.

In a place of perfect balance in Eden, mankind was tempted and has fallen ever since. With the introduction of the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve succumbed to its allure. The whispers of temptation get louder and louder in life, and indulgences get more and more extravagant. The lifestyle is no longer healthy after a while, and mankind is married (represented by the rings) to the pleasure of indulgence.

Even to the point nearing death, temptations (represented by fruit) and vanity (represented by pearls) are still present in our lives and mankind brings this idea with them to the grave, where they are still adorned by flowers.

Flowers are symbolic of how mankind finds fleeting beauty in the beginning of death and decay. Pearls represent how mankind finds beauty at the expense and death of others. Ultimately, everything is done in vain and we all fall to being subject to mortality.

But maybe that’s the beauty of it all?

The series is a current-day take on vanitas, with modern day consumer products and fast food, which aims to evoke reflection on the timelessness of temptation, indulgence and vanity, while contemplating the fleeting beauty of mortality.
